THURSDAY 04 MAY 06 new art in the basement... 060402.tmpu5.FRONT.gif 060402.tmpu5.BACK2.gif TEXT-ME-UP-FIVE TRACEY MOBERLY DANNY POCKETS DUNSTAN BRUCE JAIME RORY LUCY MORIA MINGUELLA'S MESSAGING SERVICE Living in an especially adapted environment in our coats, shirts, bags and so on, it frequently ventures out... attaching itself to our ear, hip or hand... AND WHEN WE DON'T WANT TO BE VOCAL... It allows our journey to become less boring, our seated or standing relaxation time less thought provoking. I DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY BRAIN CELLS ON THOUGHT REGURGITATION - I can communicate - I can communicate personally - no-one may be aware of my surroundings or my thoughts - but i can express that thought - my thought may not be 'thought out' but i can express it in comfort - at ease in the most public of public places and ... nobody will know - nobody can see - i can say it - i can receive it. THE USE OF ME IS CHANGING THE ETHNOLOGICAL CLIMATE AS YOU READ ... How many new, mediocre, old relationships can i breakdown? How many tedious marriages can i destroy? How many lives can i rebuild? How many barriers can i break to make the person at the other end re-build their lost confidence in aspects that would never arise - before this art of communication. What we say in a text message we would rarely communicate verbally, face to face - by phone - by e-mail or by letter. SHORT-SWEET-SUCCINCT. A sad moment - an idle moment - a happy moment - a limited amount of characters to say what? ... 5 people, their interpretation..... THE WORK Tracey Moberly 'TEXT-ME-UP-5' Tracey is using 'TEXT-ME-UP-5' to redefine the language and intimation of text between the sexes! This is her 5th version of 'TEXT-ME-UP!' exhibitions, all previously solo shows with invited interactions. The artist has saved and documented every text that she has received since 1999. Tracey has two bodies of work in this exhibition. 'STITCH-ME-UP-5!' consists of 5 Victorianesque samplers examining the language of intimation, inviting comparison with Victorian values and the womans' place in the 21st century. She has used a selection of her 2005 texts from a quintessential English dandy, a Soho sex shop proprietor and an ex-rock star's banter with his assistant. A parallel is drawn between the disposable instantaneity of the text message and the meditative, solitary, ponderous, intricate craft of cross stitching. The authors of these texts and creators of the narratives will have forgotten their disposable words. Danny Pockets Danny Pockets initiation to the world of visual engineering came circa 1974, it wasn't until 1979 however, when he became a founding member of the Universal Racket Press, that he really started paying attention. He has been doing so ever since. His work is informed by the landscape, by the palimpsest of our surroundings, by renewal and decay: As one door opens, another one closes. For this show he has produced a series of "Collapsing Sky" etchings, teamed up with the Universal Racket Press once again, this time in a unique new painting venture. He has also produced a collaborative work with Tracey Moberly. In 2000, unbeknown to each other, or without even knowing each other, climbing from the wreckage of disastrous relationships, the two documented every text and began exhibiting Danny at Whitechapel Open; The Business Design Centre and The Foundry, London and Tracey at The Castlefield Gallery, Manchester; The Foundry, London; The Zion Arts Centre, Manchester; 93 Feet East, London etc. Danny & Tracey have collaborated on a visual/audio piece titled 'Waterfall Blue Laps The Passion Pink Shore...' The collaboration of texts form the basis of a play, currently being explored as a television drama. A number of radio programmes have also been broadcast of the work . Dunstan Bruce Me and my mate Bono Sage? Saviour? Puppet? Or prat? A collection of intimate and illuminating text messages received from Bono Vox, lead singer of U2. Dunstan Bruce, ex vocalist and member of anarcho pop cabaret troupe Chumbawamba continues his fascination with all things Bono. Trying to mix pop and politics is like walking on a knife edge. Having been vilified for daring to involve one with the other Dunstan is fascinated in seeing how Bono has attempted to marry the two. Interested in the contradictions, problems and hypocritical nature of someone so rich and powerful pressing flesh with mass murderers, warmongers and the corrupt and corpulent big business bosses bono swings from brave campaigner to naïve puppet. Inspired in part by the work of Aleksander Mitic and Tony Dosen on their website http://www.bonothepuppet.com Dunstan has decided to show the world his many and varied text messages received from Bono Vox in an attempt to get to the bottom of what makes bono tick. Pompous pious prick or playful polymath/ Or both? Jaime Rory Lucy Jaime Rory Lucy. Video artist and V.J has worked with: Synergy, Orbital, Exit festival, Bollywood Brass Band among many, many others. Here he presents his new work; 'From Plato to Nato.' Moira Minguella Moira Minguella's Messaging Service is generously supporting this exhibition with the supply of an interactive texting facilities for the duration of the show. Ms Minguella has also promised to make a personal appearance and will make herself available for a limited number of press interviews. We are extremely grateful for her agreement to participate in this exhibition. artists websites: http://www.sanderswood.com http://www.billybangs.co.uk http://www.pickapocket.org http://www.sanderswood.com/moira_minguella

Oil is a curse that also fuels war, poverty and environmental destruction. Yet the companies most responsible are profiting handsomely, and they are still welcome it seems in many of our most prestigious public galleries and museums. Why? Art Not Oil is an exhibition and a campaign, committed to showing powerful political/ecological art, to seeing an end to oil sponsorship of the arts, and to helping build movements for climate justice both here and throughout the world. As well as work that looks at the negative impacts of fossil fuels, we welcome work that looks at positive alternatives and solutions. TUESDAY 04 JUNE 06 open keyboard PIANO NIGHT >>basement (until Sunday) 0607040.drawingdrawing.jpg draw_drawing_ Thanks to everyone who participated in the first show draw_drawing_ in 2004. The participants came from all over the planet; 400 people sent me about 1000 drawings. We had all kind of feedback and praise. The opening night was beautiful, we had a lot of guests and lots of London Biennale artists. The night culminated with performances by David Medalla Adam Nankervis and Ernesto Sarezale, Claudia Balduzzi, Luna Montenegro and Adrian Fisher. The success naturally was trigged by the collective efforts conducted by everyone to collaborate side-by-side representing the particular modes of expression found in the different geographies. I couldn't not mention the optimistic wishes of Liliana Mercenario Pomeroy, form Cuernavaca capturing the essence of the project. We had all kinds of visitors hosted by Cecilia Madureira, who invigilated the gallery. The visitors loved it. A Graphic Design teacher complemented on the relevance of having a show with such variety of mannerisms; from different consideration of support, mediums towards many distinct inventiveness of making the line. As he said to me: 'I should bring all my students to make them aware what a drawing can be.' The response was so overwhelming that it made me think about doing it again. giacomo picca draw_drawing_2 You are invited to take part in the exhibition 'draw_drawing_2' as part of the London Biennale 2006. The exhibition will take place at The Foundry, 86 Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, London EC2A 3JL, between 4th and 9th July 2006. The event is open to anyone who reads this. All you have to do is to make any drawing and send it to me by post, to: draw_drawing_2 19 Rumford House, Bath Terrace London SE1 6PW England You can send as many drawings as you like, at any time and it will be included in the exhibition. Also, you can forward this email to anyone who would like to participate in it. I would ask you to make a line drawing in any medium and any size not bigger then A3 (~30 cm x 44 cm), put your name, the date, the place and country where you are drawing on the same side of the drawing. If you want your name to be included on the invitation card, I have to receive your drawing by the 12 June 2006 otherwise; your name will be included in the electronic card. I am going to send as many cards as I can but if you want me to post some cards to you, could you please send me a stamped addressed envelope or give me an idea of another way to reach you. After the exhibition, the drawings are not going to be sent back but you can arrange to collect them. The drawings are going to be stored as a collection. If you need to contact me, click the link contact at: http://www.giacomopicca.com/ Performances: The exhibition will have 5 opening nights with performances. You are invited to send me an intention of performance and a proposal as soon as possible for schedule due to limited time for each night. The intention of this exhibition is to follow the journey of information through digital pathways-internet, see how far it propagates and how it returns-via post as a means of representation. It is an investigation into how the 'universal' written words open responses from experiences inhabiting particular spaces. How subjective experiences from different places are shared with other spaces: geographical spaces or mental spaces. It is an attempt to find out if a line really defines a boundary, if it is a sign for differences or similarities. As Heiddeger quotes: _a boundary is not that at which something stops but, - the boundary is that from which something begins its essential unfolding_ The boundaries of the Gallery will not be an end, not the final showing of the drawings. The visiting public will be invited to represent their own experiences and desires also - making and adding drawings throughout the show. The juxtaposition and accumulation of images that speak of the differences in realities intends to celebrate the diversity of cultures and societies and their individuality mediated through a common language, drawing. The idea is also to just appreciate a sense of joy mediated through the mark making and accumulation of lines, resulting in a drawing made by different people. Will we re-define notions of space by the process of accumulation? The exhibition is going to be held in July 2006 during the London Biennale 2006, reflecting the spirit of its founder, David Medalla.
