It is like your hopes : nothing

like your artists : nothing
like your religions : nothing "

it must be thought totally pointless,

DANIEL MILES
Daniel Miles in the last ten years has had a strong
connection with wood, an abundant but regularly misused
material that, encouraged by his fathers carpentry and
fetish for tools has become a central part of his artwork.
The meandering lines and drum and bass fuelled chip carving
are processes applied to the work creating form, texture and
anger therapy on mostly organic looking pieces following
natural paths guided by grain, gravity, tools and materials
available, creating work to touch and feel . It is mostly of
a human scale giving an otherly presence and has a tribal,
prehistoric look coming from a culturally mixed background
of Mayan Indian, European and an osmosis of worldwide
Aboriginal stylisation. The work is not solely confined to
timber, during working with the Scrapstore (arts resource
in Cornwall) Daniel was introduced to the enormous waste
produced by industry and to the public commissioning
sector. These things combined became an infinite resource for
unusual modern materials and an opportunity to make large
scale assemblages both temporary and permanent. Concerned
with the excessive wasteful culture of the present time he
looks to use this very stuff to bring focus onto this issue
and create aesthetically appealing and crafted artwork.
Recently while working on drum skins he began experimenting
with animal hide in reaction to a project brief based on
dinosaurs which you may view on
www.bigjurassic.com. The
results were "instinct" one of the pieces to be shown on the
9th November 2004 which has opened up a wholly different
approach to his work. He lives and works with his beloved
family in North Cornwall.
