BILOCATION
BILOCATION is a new album, released only in 5.1 surround sound. On Wed
29th Sept it will be presented as a sound installation in the basement
of The Foundry. The piece is 40 mins long, and will run continuously
from 7 - 11 pm.
Composer Steve Marshall spent ten years recording extraordinary sounds
in locations in India and England. On the back of a galloping horse in
Epping Forest; inside a huge echoing dome in Karnataka; spinning around
on a fairground ride; a backyard in Leytonstone in the rain; motorbikes
racing round the Wall of Death, chanting in an Indian temple... These
recordings are combined with musical sounds that were also recorded in a
variety of acoustic spaces - sometimes played through rotating speakers.
The resulting montage of sound is sometimes beautiful, and sometimes
disturbing. A huge steam train seems to materialize in the room; a
helicopter hovers menacingly overhead, the room dissolves into a
tropical forest with parrots flying past... A new digital technique has
been used to recreate the original locations in three dimensional sound
- rather like audio holograms. As well as sounds coming from all around
the listener, some appear to come from overhead.
